  New Delhi:  On this day in 1947, India became a free country at the stroke of midnight. The day marks the sacrifices of our courageous freedom fighters.  Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of independent India, raised the national flag above the Lahori Gate of the Red Fort in Delhi on August 15, 1947. Since then, August 15 has been celebrated as India's Independence Day with great fervour and enthusiasm. Every year, India celebrates its Independence Day with flag-hoisting ceremonies, parades and cultural events. There is a tradition to fly kites. It is a national holiday. Today, as India celebrates its 74th Independence Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi unfurled the Indian Tricolour at the ramparts of the Red Fort. However, the celebrations are being held in a different way this year owing to the coronavirus pandemic.
